Magnus Hertzberg

""New brooms sweep best also in Brussels""

After almost forty years as a journalist, I have extensive experience in covering issues related to Finland's relationship with the EU. I believe that Finland should be critical but constructive in its EU policy: the EU should be big on the big issues but small on the small ones. The EU should be big on peace and climate but small when it comes to micromanaging the everyday lives of its citizens.

I want to work for continued and increased military support to Ukraine so that the EU's goal of Ukraine winning the war ACTUALLY becomes a reality. Russia should be held accountable and the frozen Russian assets should be used to SUPPORT Ukraine.

It is important to stand up for DEMOCRACY and human rights. Finland and its government should also set a good example here. Otherwise, we are not really credible when we criticise how the rule of law is followed in the EU's OTHER members.

The EU should live up to the principle that forestry policy is a national matter. In this context, it is important to act as a watchdog when the Commission presents proposals that AMOUNT to a a threat to our right of self-determination.

Important political topics

SECURITY

Russia’s bestial attack on Ukraine is a threat to all Western democracy. The EU should do its utmost to help Ukraine win the war. This can only be done with a strong and united EU.

The EU’s capacity to act must be strengthened and majority voting must be used more often in security and foreign policy.

DEMOCRACY

The EU should be big on the big issues and small on the small ones. Big on issues like peace and climate change. Small when it comes to detailed regulation of citizens’ everyday lives. There must be an end to the EU’s tsunami of regulations governing our forest management. In Finland, we are better at forests than the European Commission. Forest policy should remain a national matter also in the future and attempts to expand the EU’s competence in forestry matters should be stopped… It is especially important to act as a watchdog when the Commission makes proposals that threaten our right to self-determination.
Not to mention the EU Drinking Water Directive, which could cost Finland billions annually.
