East Uusimaa

"For Less Hindsight in Politics"

Despite my young age, I have a solid experience in politics. I have been a member of the Porvoo City Council and Board since 2021. I also serve as a councillor in the Eastern Uusimaa Welfare Area. These assignments have given me a good insight into politics and what needs to be done to improve the conditions for the individual.

In recent years, I have also had the opportunity to see the work that a Member of Parliament and Minister does on a daily basis by working as an assistant to Mikko Ollikainen and previously also to Minister Anna-Maja Henriksson before she was elected to the European Parliament. About five years ago, I also had the opportunity to serve as one of the Swedish People's Party's government negotiators. The position was not easy, but it clearly shows that I am prepared to take on even difficult negotiations and always stand up for the values I believe in.

I am also running in the municipal elections

Safe elderly care

Elderly services require strong advocates across generations, because each of us ages and deserves a secure and dignified life even in old age. The population in Eastern Uusimaa is aging rapidly, which means that the demand for services is constantly increasing. We must ensure that our region has sufficient and high-quality services both now and in the future. This requires long-term planning and investments to meet the needs of the aging population without overburdening the services or compromising their quality.

It is completely irresponsible to cut, for example, places in round-the-clock care housing for the elderly, as the need for them will only increase. For many elderly people, 24-hour care is a vital part of a safe and humane life, and its availability must not depend on a lack of resources or short-sighted budget cuts. Everyone has the right to age with dignity and receive the care and support they need when required. Our duty is to ensure that these rights are upheld for everyone, regardless of age, financial situation, or place of residence.

Examples of actions I want to promote as an elected official:

• Develop cooperation between the public and private sectors to create new care home placements.
• Allocate resources to home care so that it is of high quality and meets the needs of the elderly without placing excessive pressure on caregivers.
• Ensure sufficient short-term care and support services so that family caregivers receive the rest they need.
• Expand preventive services for the elderly as well.
• Broaden the implementation of the personal doctor model, especially within elderly services.

Accessible health care

Everyone should be able to trust that social and healthcare services are available when needed. We must restore a sense of security in social and healthcare, ensuring that they can be relied upon at every stage of life, regardless of age, locality, or socioeconomic background. We need to develop social and healthcare services, not dismantle them.

The main challenge for our region this term has been, in particular, the economy. The Eastern Uusimaa welfare area is currently under special supervision by the ministry. Our situation is well illustrated by the fact that if we had adjusted the economy according to the ministry’s directives, we would also have had to cut statutory services. I consider this completely irresponsible. It is our responsibility as decision-makers to ensure that the Eastern Uusimaa welfare area remains an independent region in the future while we continue to develop the area's services.

Examples of actions I want to promote as an elected official:

• Ensure that appointment scheduling and consultations in primary care and social services function smoothly, for example by increasing resources and developing digital services.
• Strengthen mobile services and home-delivered social and healthcare services to make them more accessible, particularly in rural areas.
• Expand preventive services.
• Ensure that local decision-making remains in the hands of the community and that authority is not transferred to other regions or the national government.
• Invest in recruitment and working conditions to strengthen the region's own service provision.

Mental Health

For many, the threshold for seeking help for mental health issues is still too high, and this barrier must be actively lowered by all possible means. Improving the accessibility of mental health services is not only crucial from a humanitarian perspective, but also economically sensible, as early intervention prevents the need for more intensive and expensive services later on. Investing in preventive services pays off in the long run for both individual well-being and societal resources.

In particular, mental health services for young people need to be prioritized, as early assistance can prevent problems from becoming prolonged and more severe. The Eastern Uusimaa welfare area has demonstrated an excellent example through a successful pilot project, in which individuals under 30 had the opportunity to meet a mental health professional free of charge and without an appointment. Such low-threshold services are of utmost importance, as they make seeking help easier, faster, and reduce stigma.

Examples of actions I want to promote as an elected official:

• Expand mental health services that provide assistance without the need for a referral and long waiting times.
• Increase the number of school psychologists and counselors so that young people receive timely help without long waits.
• Provide low-threshold counseling services for working-age individuals, for instance through occupational health services and regional wellness centers.
• Invest in recruiting mental health professionals and improving working conditions to ensure the region has sufficient expertise.
• Strengthen the dialogue on mental health in schools, workplaces, and communities so that issues can be addressed early.
