"For Less Hindsight in Politics"
My name is Frida Sigfrids and I am running for a new term in Porvoo City Council. At the moment I serve as a member of the City Council and the City Board. Nevertheless, I do not feel finished with the work I have started and I am therefore seeking reelection.
In three years on the City Council, I have learnt that time is very short in politics. To make concrete things happen requires long-term work over several terms, and I am ready to do that. We need more concrete measures to curb climate change and we need to make the city more attractive to potential newcomers by investing in education and a sustainable economy. Porvoo still has untapped potential and I want Porvoo to be the best city to live in regardless of age. That is why I have chosen to run in the 2025 municipal elections.
I hope to continue to be your voice and the voice of future generations in decision-making in Porvoo.
Important political topics
Forerunners in climate and the environment
The City of Porvoo's strategy states that Porvoo will be climate neutral by 2030. However, we will not reach our target with current measures. Climate change is a global challenge, but one that requires local solutions. Research shows unequivocally that we will face disastrous consequences if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement targets. That is why it is important that Porvoo also does everything it can.
Porvoo is already a pioneer on many fronts in the fight against climate change, and there are large companies here that are constantly working to meet the challenges. In this council term, we have also set up a EUR 10 million Green Transition Fund to encourage entrepreneurs to work against climate change. But we can do even better.
Concrete measures I want to work for in City Council:
• Develop a functioning public transport system that also extends to the villages of Porvoo.
• Enabling recycling for more and more people in Porvoo, with a special focus on recycling plastics.
• More effective measures to reduce food waste and Porvoo's commitment to distributing surplus food to those in need.
• Getting rid of the last remaining oil-fired city buildings by changing the heating method.
• Investing in sustainable construction by setting criteria for sustainability and not just economic indicators.
The best schools
With the transfer of health and social services to the welfare regions, education is one of the most important tasks of the City of Porvoo. A good general education provides the basis for independent living and a high level of education enables Finland to succeed in international competition. Porvoo must be able to offer a high level of education both in the city centre and in rural areas. A safe learning environment is one of the cornerstones of safe and quality education. It does not include mould or bad indoor air.
The ageing population and the decreasing number of children in Porvoo will put further pressure on the school network. We have experienced the consequences of this in practice during this term of office. I think the most important thing is that the interests of the child are always at the centre of all discussions. Porvoo must be a city that invests in quality education from early childhood education to secondary education, remembering also the role of liberal education.x
Concrete measures I want to work for in City Council:
• That Porvoo offers high quality education both in the city centre and in the countryside.
• That all students in Porvoo have access to the help they need.
• That all pupils, students and staff have a safe learning environment without indoor air problems.
• That guidance services are adequately resourced so all pupils and students have access to the information they need about further education.
• That all children have the right to subjective day care in small enough groups.
Economy & Business
The foundation of a well-functioning city is a sustainable economy.Porvoo's economic situation has been relatively good for a long time.Despite this, the national economic situation has also affected Porvoo, which is why we have set up a productivity and rebalancing programme during this council term.
Promoting entrepreneurship is key to strengthening the city's vitality and economic development.I want to work for measures that streamline licensing processes, improve business support and strengthen cooperation between the municipality and business. The aim is to create a business-friendly environment where new and small and medium-sized enterprises can grow and develop innovative solutions, especially in the fields of sustainability and technology.
Concrete measures I want to work for in City Council:
• Porvoo must continue to see growth, and therefore I do not want to increase the municipal tax.
• To create a faster and more efficient process for dealing with building permits and other authorisations.
• Porvoo must continue to be an attractive city for both new potential residents and tourists, and this requires investment in marketing.
• Continue to develop participatory budgeting so that residents' ideas for the development of the city can be translated into concrete funding.
• Developing new areas for both business and housing.
