Mathias Skytte – Experience and Responsibility for the Future of Vaasa
I am running in the municipal election to work towards an economically strong and sustainable future for Vaasa. With over 12 years of experience in community development and a background as an economist in the export industry, I understand how important it is to make wise decisions that foster long-term growth and stability.
Vaasa needs a policies that strengthens the business community, creates new jobs, and ensures responsible management of the municipality’s finances. I want to contribute my knowledge and experience to drive policies that benefit both residents and businesses, focusing on growth without compromising stability.
My vision is for a Vaasa that is attractive for investment, provides excellent service to its residents, and has a solid economic foundation. By making the right decisions today, we build a stronger future together.

Important political topics
Housing and Construction
Wärtsilä's area in Vöyrinkaupunki should be the number one priority for development. We need housing for students, seniors, and families with children, combined with a Culture and Congress Center
Economy & Business
Vaasa's economy will be challenging in the coming years. We need to focus on investments that will lead to growth in the long term while critically reviewing investments in, for example, bicycle paths. Investments should be made in these as well, but not at any cost. In my opinion, the investments in recent years have been excessive, and planning should be more cost-effective
Municipal and urban vitality
Many things are already done very well in Vaasa today, but we can always improve. To strengthen Vaasa's vitality and attractiveness, it is crucial to develop collaboration between universities, companies, and the city to drive innovation and create a dynamic business environment. By promoting new establishments and supporting local businesses with smooth permit processes, growth and investments in the region can be facilitated. Cooperation with neighboring municipalities is also central to strong regional development and to create a cohesive and competitive labor market.
To increase the city's attractiveness, it is important to create vibrant neighborhoods with a rich cultural and recreational offering as well as good recreational opportunities. Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in Vaasa's future, and therefore the city should actively work for a bridge over Kvarken, an improved port road, and a coastal railway extending from Kokkola to Turku. These investments would strengthen the region's accessibility, increase competitiveness, and improve opportunities for both businesses and residents.

Early childhood education should be free for everyone.
Completely free services tend to be misused. This means that people are less diligent in reporting absences, travel, etc., as there are no consequences. However, I believe the fee should be the same for everyone and lower than it is today.

Schools should prioritize traditional textbooks over digital learning materials.
Physical books create different memories in the brain – where on the page something was read, whether it was at the top or bottom, at the beginning or end. This helps children memorize in a different way. Our children already get enough screen time outside of school, so screen time in school should be limited. Additionally, physical books are more economically sustainable over time.

One of the municipality’s most important tasks is to invest in sports facilities and opportunities for exercise and recreation.
With eight years of experience as chairman of the board for Vaasa region’s arenas, I fully agree. We should invest in various types of sports facilities as well as fitness and recreational opportunities for people of all ages. These bring people together, create social connections, and build lifelong networks. Vaasa has many great facilities, but operational costs are high, which affects rental prices. The city should provide a bit more subsidies.

It is important to provide all residents with equal opportunities for cultural activities.
Culture is important, but not at any cost. High culture, such as the city orchestra, receives significant annual funding, while young people are often overlooked. Vaasa lacks venues and activities that appeal to youth. Keltsu and Club 25 were valued meeting places that unfortunately no longer exist. We need to invest in similar initiatives, and the Wärtsilä area could provide suitable spaces.

The municipality should introduce or improve opportunities for residents to influence how municipal funds are used through participatory budgeting.
Vaasa already has participatory budgeting. To some extent, this is good, but we also have 55 city council members elected through democratic elections. It is always possible to contact them if something is not right. I have always listened to suggestions and criticism and forwarded them when justified.

The municipality should invest in public transportation.
The City should invest in public transportation. I personally use public transportation to manage my daily routine since we only have one car. Overall, my experience is positive, and the prices are reasonable today. One area for development could be collaboration with various organizers, for example, free public transportation to and from Vaasa Sport and VPS matches. It might also be worth trying out some late-night routes to see if there is interest and demand

It should be possible to be a resident in more than one municipality, for example, through digital municipal citizenship.

The municipality should better facilitate the expansion of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power.
Vaasa is one of the municipalities in Finland with a high population density per square kilometer. In other words, it is difficult to build wind power in Vaasa. However, we should ensure that industries consider and install solar panels where possible, in combination with various energy storage systems. This possibility is, however, limited by national laws and regulations. We should continue to work on these.

The municipality should mix more housing types in planning than is currently the case.
Perhaps to some extent, but I find it hard to envision a pleasant environment with a jumble of detached houses and high-rise buildings. However, at the national level, legislation should be changed so that those who file complaints just to cause trouble and delay are held accountable for unfounded complaints. In Vaasa, the development of too many areas is hindered precisely because of this.

The municipality should introduce anonymous recruitment.
In Vaasa, we already have anonymous recruitment, and based on the feedback I have received, it works well.

If you could give a superpower to your future political leader, what would it be?
Overall, I call for strict budgets and an attitude that one euro of tax money is twice as valuable as one\'s own euro. In Finland, we waste tax money generously on irrelevant projects, various unions that have outlived their time, and politically affiliated actors. These should be consistently eliminated.
